Cement companies do community service

 JOWAI: Various cement companies operational in Lumshnong area within Khliehriat Civil Sub-Division under the banner of the Jaintia Hills Cements Manufacture Association (JHCMA) have sponsored Rs. 5.76 lakh annually for starting a Commerce Stream in Jaintia Eastern College, Khliehriat.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the governing body and officials of the JHCMA before the Additional Deputy Commissioner in charge Khliehriat Sub-Division, E Kharmalki, leaders of the Khasi Students Union, Jaintia Hills District unit on Tuesday.

Speaking to media persons, Gopal Sharma and SK Rai informed that the introduction of a Commerce Stream in the college would greatly benefit the local students residing in Khliehriat area.

“We have come here not only to do business, but also to do community service”, JHCMA General Secretary, SK Rai said.Meanwhile, Jaintia Eastern College Principal, Phervision Nongtdu informed that starting a Commerce stream in the college would benefit the students.

He further informed that the college has already started Commerce Stream from the academic year 2011-12.

It may be mentioned here that the Khasi Students’ Union, Jaintia Hills District Unit in the past urged all cement plants in Jaintia Hills to provide financial assistant to the only College within Khliehriat Sub-Division.

The governing body lauded the KSU for the initiative taken to uplift the standard of the college.
