CRPF jawan dies as weapon misfires

TURA: A CRPF jawan who happened to be a part of a new company deployed for law and order duty in Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma’s home constituency of Ampati was killed after his service rifle accidently fired while he was proceeding for duty on Wednesday night.

The 67 Battalion of the CRPF, a new force had been deployed only three days ago for law and order duty. It was stationed at the Ampati mini stadium.

The armed comapny was moving out for its first patrol duty at 7:30 pm on Wednesday when jawan BT Bandopadhay accidently dropped his Insas automatic rifle that had already been cocked. A single round was fired from the weapon which pierced his abdomen and lungs leading to his death before medical aid could reach him.

The battalion was deployed for law and order duty in view of the upcoming Wangala festive season.
