Poonam Rani to lead India

New Delhi: Talented forward Poonam Rani was on Wednesday handed over the reigns of the Indian team for the four-nation under-21 hockey tournament, starting from November 8. The Junior Women Lal Bahadur Shastri tournament will have Australia, Germany and New Zealand as other teams. The event will be played at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in a round-robin format.

TEAM: Goalkeepers: Sukhmani Virk, Bigan Soy. Defenders: Deep Grace Ekka, Jaspreet Kaur, Apoorva Vishwakarma and Sandeep Kaur. Midfielders: Niki Pradhan, Namita Toppo, Monika Malik, Balvinder Kaur Mehra and Anju Dhiman. Forwards: Navjot Kaur, Neha Goyal, Anupa Barla Lilima Minz, Poonam Rani (C), Navneet Kaur and Anima Minz. Kolkata: RCF Kapurthala, Canara Bank, and South Central Railway moved to the quarter finals beating All India Customs 3-0, Punjab Sports and 4-1, and School of Excellance (Rourkela)7-6 respectively at the pre-quarters of the 116th Coal India Beighton Cup hockey tournament here on Wednesday. R C F Kapurthala’s Sanjay Bir scored twice and Gaghandeep Singh struck once to oust All India Customs, Canara Bank’s Bijuwad Singh, MV Rama Rao, KM Sommana and John Verghese scored apeice against Punjab Sports’ whose lone goal was scored by Sarabjit Singh.(UNI)
