11 killed as bus falls into gorge

Srinagar: At least eleven people were killed and 38 others injured when a bus fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kargil district, police said here on Saturday. The bus carrying 49 passengers was on its way to Kargil town from Padum when it skidded off the road and rolled into the gorge near Panzilla, 300 km from here, yesterday. At least 11 passengers, including a child, died and 38 others were injured in the mishap, police said. While 34 injured were taken to hospitals in Padum and Kargil, four critically injured have been shifted to hospitals in Srinagar and Leh, they said. (PTI)

DC picks up broom to inspire cleanliness

Bundi (Raj): Aiming at inspiring people to keep neighbourhood clean ahead of the ‘Bundi Utsav’, the District Collector on Saturday picked up a broom and swept the city. “The city is our home and it is the duty of every citizen to keep it neat and pollution free…When the tourists visit Bundi, they must see it clean,” District Collector Aarti Dogera said. Leading a group of 36 college students, she set out to sweep the city clean. The three-day Bundi Utsav, which begins on November 14, will see performances by folk artists from Assam, Haryana, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. There will also be a football match between foreign tourists and locals. Bundi witnesses tourist influx from October to March every year. (PTI)

Couple run over by bus

Kakinada: A couple travelling on a motorcycle was killed on the spot when a speeding college bus dashed against them near Venkatachalam Cross Roads on the Rajanagaram-Kakinada ADB Road on Saturday. The Peddapuram police who registered the case identified them as Vundavalli Dorababu (44) and his wife Mangatayaru (41), natives of Pedarayavaram Village of Gandepalli Mandal. The bodies were sent to Kakinada Government General Hospital here for post-mortem. The bus driver was arrested and further investigation is on, the police said. (UNI)

Short circuit in laptop kills youth

Kolkata: A 32-year-old man was electrocuted today due to a short circuit in his laptop here, police said. Sayan Chowdhury fell asleep last night with laptop’s headphone in ear at his house in Patuli area, they said. The laptop was on for the entire night and Chowdhury was electrocuted in his sleep following a short circuit in the computer, police said. (PTI)

Neighbours kill brothers over land feud

Mandi (Himachal Pradesh): Two brothers were brutally murdered by their neighbours over a land dispute here early Saturday, police said. Onkar Kumar, 40, and his 27-year-old brother Anil were killed with sickles in Ghantaur village, some 90 km from this village headquarters, Superintendent of Police P.D. Prasad told IANS. He said prime facie, it seemed the brothers were locked in a land dispute with their neighbours. “Six injured belonging to both families have been admitted to hospital,” he added. (IANS)

Man commits suicide

Ballia (UP): A man employed with the police department on Saturday allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a country made revolver here, officials said. Shiv Kumar Maurya, a driver at Nagra police station, committed suicide by shooting himself with a country made rifle, SP Ram Bharose said. The body and the weapon were recovered from a field adjacent to the police station, he said. Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide. However, the details would be known after the postmortem report, the SP said. (PTI)

Maoists kill CPI-M member

Jhargram (WB): Suspecting him to be a police informer, Maoists shot dead a local CPI-M leader in West Midnapore district, police said. The bullet-riddled body of 45-year-old Manik Mandi, CPI-M branch secretary of Kukra Khupi area, was found this morning near the bank of Dulung river at Jambani, they said. Mandi was missing since yesterday after he visited a relative’s house in a nearby village bordering Jharkhand. Posters claiming that Mandi was killed for being a police informer were found strewn near the body. (PTI)

Hardcore maoists arrested

Begusarai: Two hardcore cadres of the proscribed CPI (Maoist) have been arrested along with fire-arms at Aalapur vilalge under Teghra police station area in the district. The district Superintendent of Police Chhatranil Singh said here today acting on a tip-off, raid was conducted at a hide-out in Aalapur village, leading to arrest of two hard core Maoists late last night. ”One of the Maoists was identified as Radhe Sav, a self styled zonal commander of the banned outfit,” Singh said, adding the arrested maoists were wanted since long in connection with several disruptive activities engineered by them in Begusarai and other parts of the state.
