HC  orders Centre to pay Rs 10 lakh to rape victim

Agartala: The Gauhati High Court has ordered the Union Human Resources Development ministry to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to a girl, who was raped by her school principal in Tripura. Justice Arun Chandra Upadhyay of the High Court on Friday ordered a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to be paid to the victim while hearing a petition jointly filed by the girl’s family and the Tripura’s Women’s Commission seeking a compensation of Rs 50 lakh from the Ministry. The girl was a student of Class VIII at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Kakraban in South Tripura district when she was raped by her school principal, HS Tiwari in 1998. The girl delivered a baby after she was raped by Tiwari. Tiwari is now serving life term in jail. (PTI)

Arunachal Pradesh bridge collapse toll touches 15

Itanagar: Following the recovery of more bodies, the death toll in the October 29 bridge collapse at Seppa in East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh rose to 15, official sources said here on Monday. Deputy Commissioner, East Kameng, Tope Bam said with more bodies recovered, the toll mounted to 15. Official sources said that ten people were rescued in serious condition while 37 sustained minor injuries in the tragic incident. The incident took place when about 60-70 people assembled on the hanging foot bridge to collect a type of edible insect. After the collapsed, massive search and rescue operations were conducted by the police and fire brigade personnel with the help of the Army. (UNI)

Mizoram teachers to go on strike

Aizawl: Around 10,000 students are likely to be affected as teachers belonging to Mizoram Deficit Mission Schools Association have decided to launch indefinite strike from Tuesday. The strike, to be launched ahead of the annual examinations, by teachers of some the best educational institutions in the state is likely to affected classes. The teachers have been demanding hike in the salaries in line with Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, introduction of pension scheme and application of modified ACP. (PTI)
