JOWAI: A night super bus (AS01Q-6077) transporting over 40 elderly people from Guwahati to Tripura overturned near Byndihati village in Jaintia Hills district in the wee hour on Friday, killing four persons including three women and injuring more than 30 others.

The deceased have been identified as Jayamaya Paul (58), Kalpana Biswas (60), Subha Nandi (70) and Rohit Das Muhuri (68), all of whom died on the spot.

According to police, the passengers were returning from a pilgrimage.

A police official said that the driver of the ill-fated bus might have lost control due to over-speeding as a result of which the bus overturned.

The injured were shifted to the Khliehriat Community Health Centre for treatment.
