TURA: A State medical doctor who was at the centre of the assault incident that took place between a Shillong-based businessman who is the proprieter of Bhajanlal’s and former DSP Champion Sangma that resulted in the the then Meghalaya DGP rushing to the aid of his friend who was locked up, has given his side of the story.

The doctor, Zimmey Carter N Sangma, has clarified that the incident took place inside the businessman’s shop over an insult the trader made against his community leading to an altercation.

“Bhajanlal owner Pawan Bajoria ordered his staff to down the shutters and tried to manhandle me and a friend inside the shop but we managed to escape and soon the GSU, DSP Champion Sangma, my cousin Jonathan Sangma rushed to the scene,” said the doctor.

He added that after the FIR was launched Bajoria was brought to the station where he apologized for his ‘mistakes’ and wanted to leave.

“Because of his abusive wordings against my community and the attempt to manhandle us, DSP Champion not only slapped him but also beat him until he started crying out loud. It was not me but Bajoria who was crying out loud,” said the doctor denying any of the recent statement about him with a red face outside the shop.

He revealed that it was only after DSP Champion refused to let off the businessman that the situation took a different turn.

“We rejected the offer of case withdrawal by Bajoria’s relatives and because of which they got in touch with the then DGP BK Dey Sawain,” said Dr Sangma.

Champion wife not bailer for spouse: After the counter FIR was filed by Bajoria against DSP Champion Sangma and the doctor, both were compelled to obtain bail.

Surprisingly, the doctor has revealed that he obtained PR bail with his brother Jonathan as the bailer while the bailer for Champion was one Pranklip Marak and not the DSP’s wife.

“Champion’s wife had nothing to do with the case for which everyone wondered how the court kept issuing summons to her repeatedly till the final arrest warrant that was issued against her,” wondered Dr Sangma.

He also goes on to mention that at a later stage Pawan Bajoria and he compromised the matter and withdrew each other’s case.

The doctor said that Bajoria also filed a petition seeking withdrawal of his case against the DSP but the judge refused to accept it saying that he (Champion) must personally appear along with the trader.

“She (judge) accepted our withdrawal matter between Pawan and myself but case against Champion continued as the judge refused to quash the case,” the doctor said.

The infamous words of the then DGP Sawain to the junior officials of the sardar police station that got much publicized still echo in the halls of the State police department.

“The lock in the police station is to lock up Bangladeshis, not respectable persons like this,” the DGP is alleged to have thundered to the second officer in charge of the police station before getting his friend released breaking all rules of the land.
