Maoist couple lays down arms

KOLKATA: Responding to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s call, dreaded Maoists Jagari Baske and her husband Rajaram Soren, wanted in connection with several murders and incidents of ambush on security personnel, surrendered on Thursday before police.

Jagari(26) and Rajaram (34), accompanied by their four-year-old son Bahadur, were also presented before the Chief Minister at the state secretariat.

Welcoming their decision to lay down arms, Ms Banerjee promised that her Government would take care of the ultras, who would surrender and shun violence. The couple, who were top members of the Ayodhya Squad of the Maoists in Purulia district, first contacted SP, Purulia. The SP then contacted IG (IB) O P Gupta. Dressed in army fatigue, they finally surrendered to Mr Gupta at the state secretariat. Jagari, whose acts and deeds became part of the lores in the extremist-hit Jangalmahal area, and her husband were involved in violent incidents in Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore district. (UNI)
