KOHIMA: The Nagaland Cabinet of Ministers decided not to appeal to the Supreme Court against the judgment of the High Court directing the Nagaland Government to hold municipal elections by January 20, 2012, but approved a request from the state Election Commission for extension of elections.
According to official sources here on Thursday the Nagaland Cabinet of Ministers met at Kohima on Wednesday, decided that if the civic polls were to be extended, it would mean that they could be held either in February or March next year.
With the state Cabinet having approved its request for extension of the Court deadline of January 20, the state Election Commission could appeal to the Gauhati High Court for extending the deadline.
In an affidavit, the state Election Commission had maintained that the period needed for the entire process such as rolls revision and notifications etc of civic polls was 72 working days.
The Nagaland Cabinet at its meeting also decided to acknowledge, recognise and honour the Identity Card Holders of the Nagaland Contractors and Suppliers Union (NCSU).
It, however, reaffirmed its earlier decision for implementation of the 2006 rules governing registration of contractors.
Sources disclosed that though the state Cabinet decided to recognise ID card holders of the NCSU, yet it decided that it was not necessary that only NCSU ID card holders should be given contract works within the state.
Sources also revealed that the cabinet decided to institute a High Power Committee (HPC) headed by the state Chief Secretary to study various demands for upgradation of administrative establishments such as police stations, RB blocks and to submit recommendations within December next.
The Cabinet also decided that no road or institution could be named after a person so long that person was alive.
It decided that such proposals could be discussed and recommended through the respective District Planning and Development Board for Government approval. (UNI)
