SHILLONG: The State Government has sought for extra funds for the construction of Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) proposed to come up at Mawiong, around 10 kilometers from the State capital.

Talking to The Shillong Times here on Friday, principal Secretary, Transport department, H Marwein said, “Some extra funds is required for the project.”

It is learnt that the State Government has sent a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Union DoNER Ministry for sanctioning of funds for the construction of the bus terminus at Mawiong.

Reacting to a query about land acquisition for the project, Marwein said that the Deputy Commissioner is assessing the suitability of land for the project.

The estimated budget of the project is around Rs 40 crore, Marwein said, while adding that the survey for the construction of the ISBT has been completed.

“The proposed ISBT will be big enough to accommodate 200 buses,” he added.

The State Government has also formed a committee to assess the feasibility of the project and to look into the various minute details of the project.

The Government is keeping its fingers crossed over land acquisition for the ISBT since acquiring land for Government projects is considered to be a huge challenge in the State. Several important projects including the Shillong Bypass and expansion of the Shillong Airport at Umroi has been delayed for years due to delay in acquiring land from the owners.

It may, however, be noted that Transport Minister AT Mondal had, on an earlier occasion, maintained that land acquisition for the project would not be an issue since the land owners had already agreed to part with their land for the ISBT project.
