SHILLONG: “UDP is committed to bring all the regional forces under one platform,” said former Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy.
While admitting that it is a big challenge for the party to unite all regional forces, Dr Roy, who is also the president of UDP, told The Shillong Times on Monday that his party would continue to hold dialogue with the leaders of like-minded regional parties in this regard.
Dr Roy said majority of the people feel that it is high time for the regional parties to join hands.
“We need to understand that having a short-term alliance would not serve any purpose. Such alliance does not last long and such alliance collapses once differences crop up among its constituents,” UDP president said.
When asked about HSPDP supremo Hoping Stone Lyngdoh’s remark that this unification move has no merit, he said, “This is a personal opinion of Lyngdoh”.
“We will continue to persuade the HSPDP to come under one roof,” Dr Roy said.
It may be mentioned that the UDP Central Executive Committee is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to chalk out the party’s strategies for the 2013 Assembly election.
On KHNAM’s reported move to merge with his party, he said UDP had assigned some of its senior leaders to complete all the formalities.
On differences among the KHNAM leaders over the merger move, he said its leaders would resolve it amicably.
