SHILLONG: Bowing to the agitating Meghalaya Transport Corporation workers, the State Government has decided to clear their pending salaries.

Commissioner of Transport, SN Marak, told The Shillong Times on Saturday that the Government has already released the money but the salary would be paid only next week after certain formalities.

“Some formalities are there and I have already assured the workers that their salaries would be paid within the coming week,” Marak added.

The Meghalaya Transport Corporation Workers’ Union (MTCWU) had threatened a three-day total strike from Monday in protest against non-payment of their salary for the past four months.

Reacting to a query on the delay in paying salaries to the MTC staff, the official stated that the implementation of the Fourth Pay Commissioner has created the huge financial deficit in the Corporation.

The MTC workers, who had staged a dharna throughout this week, were demanding payment of their salaries and release of their 30 per cent arrears.

Commenting about the payment of arrears, Marak said that the Corporation has already requested the State Government to release the arrears at the earliest.
