Three killed in road mishap

SHILLONG: Three people were crushed to death when a coal-laden truck rammed into a car at Mawblei on National Highway 44 late Friday night.

The deceased have been identified as Swollington Kharbani (40) of the Fire Service, who was posted in Shillong and a resident of Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, Kamani Rajbongshi of Mawngap and Bahabor Kharsohnoh of Khadar (12) mile, Upper Shillong. The bodies were later brought to Shillong Civil Hospital.

According to the police, the three unfortunate victims were crushed inside their Maruti car (ML05 D 3328) when the truck (TR 01 K 1584) rammed into their vehicle. The driver of the truck is absconding, police added.

Sources also informed that the bodies had to be extracted inside the mangled vehicle using a power cutter.

However, police is yet to ascertain the actual reason behind the accident. The seized truck has been kept at the Madanrting Beat House.

Meanwhile, family members of Swollington said that the Maruti car, which was on its way to Shillong, was moving slowly behind another truck when the speeding truck rammed it from behind.
