SHILLONG: Reacting to the demand of the Opposition leader Conrad K Sangma to convene the Winter Assembly Session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rowell Lyngdoh on Saturday said that a round table conference is required to discuss on the matter.
“If the Government feels it is important to call for a Winter Assembly Session, it would do so, but this is the call of the Chief Minister,” Lyngdoh told The Shillong Times on Saturday.
However, Lyngdoh said that the matter would be discussed with the Chief Minister after he returns back to the State.
“The Chief Minister is presently out of station,” Lyngdoh added.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister also pointed out that there were certain rules to conducting a session. A session should be conducted after every six months and it should not intervene six months provided there are some serious and important issues which need to be discussed, he said.
It may be mentioned that the last time the Assembly had met was in September.
Meanwhile, reacting to Conrad’s allegation on the failure of the government to tackle law and order in Garo Hills, Lyngdoh said “The Government is not sitting with folded arms.”
Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope also echoed Lyngdoh, saying that the decision to conduct a session should be taken by the Chief Minister.”
It should be noted that many citizens were also in favour of conducting the Winter Assembly session since the Assembly had only met for 16 days this year.
However, there were many who were against the Assembly session. In their opinion the government should be involved in development activities instead of spending time conductiing Assembly sessions.
