‘Hooka Bars’ banned in Gurgaon, Faridabad
Chandigarh: ‘Hooka Bars’ serving tobacco molasses containing nicotine, often visited by college students and youths, have been banned in Gurgaon and Faridabad in the National Capital Territory region. These bars have also been banned in two other districts – Panchkula and Hisar, an official spokesman said here today. The decision has been taken after taking into account the health hazards of tobacco and nicotine. (PTI)
Dalit teacher beaten up by students
Muzzaffarnagar: A Dalit teacher was allegedly beaten up by his students in this district for not heeding to their warning of leaving his job. Niten Kumar had been warned against teaching in the college by the students. He was thrashed severely on Wednesday when he was about to deboard a bus for college, police said. According to police, the accused have been suspended from the college and a case under Dalit Atrocities Prevention Act in addition to a criminal case has been lodged against them. (PTI)
Four get life imprisonment
Ballia (UP): Four members of a family were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court here in a dowry death case. On January 15, 2006, Babita was burnt to death by her husband Raj Kumar, his father Rama Shanker, mother Sheela Devi and brother Sandhya over dowry in Subhash Nagar area, prosecution sources said here. On the basis of evidence, Additional Sessions Judge J K Sinha held all the four accused guilty yesterday and sentenced them to life term. (PTI)
Fake Indian currency, heroin seized
Amritsar: The BSF on Thursday seized fake Indian currency with a face value of Rs 9.80 lakh and 5 kg of heroin worth Rs 25 crore in the international market, which was thrown from the Pakistani side in small packets. During wee hours this morning, a BSF patrol party saw some people from the Pakistani side throwing small packets near the zero line, a BSF officer said. The packets contained fake Indian currency with a face value of Rs 9.80 lakhs in denomination of Rs 1,000. Besides, there were five packets each carrying one kg heroin, he said. (PTI)
Teachers charge sheeted in Jammu
Jammu: Jammu Chief Education Officer charge sheeted five teachers for remaining absent from their duty, official sources here on Thursday said. “CEO Jammu Natha Ram on Wednesday paid surprise visits in Bhalwal Zone and found five teachers absent from the duty following which he charge sheeted them on the spot,” sources said and added that an explanation has also been sought from them and salaries have been withheld. Minor gangraped
Muzzafarnagar: A 12-year old girl was allegedly abducted and gangraped by five youths here, police said. The girl was abducted from her village in Meeranpur area and taken to a nearby forest where the youth allegedly raped her for three days, police said. Four of the accused have been nabbed while the hunt for the fifth is still on, they said adding the girl has been sent for medical examination. (PTI)
10 killed in road mishap
Jaipur: Ten persons, including four children, were on Thursday killed and seven others injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling was hit by a truck in this district. The victims were on their way to Sanganer town in Jaipur from Dayalpura village in Tonk district when a speeding truck hit the tractor trolley in which they were travelling from the back, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Jaipur-South) Jose Mohan said. The trolley overturned after being hit by the truck and the occupants got crushed which led to the maximum number of deaths, he said. Four women, an equal number of children and two men were killed in the incident which occurred near Lalsot road in Chaksu town. (PTI)
Man beaten to death
Azamgarh (UP): A man was allegedly beaten to death by his brothers over a petty dispute in Raunapar area near here, police said on Thursday. Chotte Lal Yadav (28) was beaten up by his brothers Brij Lal and Amrit Lal over a petty dispute in Mahula village yesterday, they said. Yadav was admitted to a private hospital where he died last night. (PTI)
