Cong election committee meets today

 SHILLONG: The first meeting of the 13-member Election Co-ordination Committee of the Congress would be held on Monday at 6 pm.

A senior State Congress leader on Sunday informed that AICC general secretary in-charge Meghalaya, Dhaniram Shandil, and his deputy, Sanjay Bapna, would attend the meeting besides other senior party leaders from the State who are the members of the committee.

Besides Shandil and Bapna, other members in the committee include incumbent Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and two former Chief Ministers – DD Lapang and Salseng C Marak, Union Minister of State for Water Resources Vincent H Pala, MPCC working president Deborah Ch Marak, Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh, Education Minister RC Laloo, former Union Minister PR Kyndiah, former Minister FW Momin and former National Commission for Women member Wansuk Syiem.

According to the senior Congress leader, the meeting is expected to dwell on the party’s prospects in the upcoming 2013 Assembly election.

Besides formulating the strategies for the election, the members would also deliberate on the ways and means to strengthen the party at the grassroots level, he added.

The Congress leader also said that the members are likely to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation in Garo Hills and review the implementation of the various Central flagship programme. Besides, the Integrated Basin Development & Livelihood Programme, which is a State Flagship Programme, would also be a subject of discussion.

The senior leader alsi hinted that the party may soon release the list of candidates for the 2013 Assembly elections in the State.
