SHILLONG: The Dr PB Deb Road (from Hotel Grace towards Bangiya Sahitya Parishad (BSS) at Jail Road) is in a state of utter mess. The road has become narrower towards the BSS where the CGI sheets which has been erected as a boundary all along the Old Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has encroached into the PWD road. With moving vehicles from Quinton Road running 24 hours one has to be extra cautious in this junction.

A resident of this road said that there is a children’s school here besides the Government Girls’ HS School at a stone throw distance and the narrow road with running vehicles makes it increasingly difficult not only for the students and their parents but also for the residents. “Cars are parked all along this CGI sheet boundary throughout the day besides there is rampant littering by passerby and dumping of garbage,” said an irate resident from the area.

Another resident said that the road has become narrower near BSS due to the encroachment by the proposed hoteliers in the Old SMB site. “Pedestrians taking this portion have to stop since moving vehicle poses a threat due to the narrow road,” he said. A teacher from Government Girls’ HS School said that with the new traffic arrangement in place besides rampant dumping and littering has earned a bad name for this road.

Public from this area complained of foul smell that emanates from the CGI sheet boundary due to large scale littering by passerby, animals and garbage dumping.

An elderly gentleman said that the commercial establishments in the area have also made the stretch a dumping ground.

The residents of this area said that wastes in the form of carton, paper, kitchen and other wastes are regularly dumped in this stretch which emanates foul smell, too.

Besides foul smell the moving vehicles running over these dumping spreads the wastes into the premises of the nearby houses. “The condition gets worse during the windy and rainy season,” rued a woman resident. These residents have urged the authorities to put a makeshift garbage bin in the area so that the residents do not have to bear the wastes of commercial establishments.
