SHILLONG: After fifty years of continuous service as the Rangbah Shnong of Nongsohphoh locality (Naspati Ghari) in the city, Ma Khroo Shullai, a 97-year-old traditional chief, voluntarily relinquished the post of Rangbah Shnong on Friday ostensibly due to old age.
“I pray to the Almighty that the affairs of the Dorbar Shnong will go on smoothly from now onwards and peace, tranquility and harmony will be the order of the day,” Shullai said following his announcement.
“I hope that the locality will shine under the guidance and leadership of the new Rangbah Shnong,” he added.
Ma Khroo’s 50 years of service to the locality was commemorated in a grand celebration in the city recently where the nonagenarian was felicitated by Union Minister of State Vincent H Pala in the presence of local MLA Manas Chaudhuri, Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai, KHNAM legislator Paul Lyngdoh, Kong Roshan Warjri, besides others.
Ma Khroo was elected as the Rangbah Shnong of Nongsohphoh locality in 1960 and has been actively attending to his duties till the announcement on Friday. He was a renowned footballer of his time, representing the Jaintia Football Club (JFC) as a fullback (stopper). Presently he is an active member of the Sein Jaintia, managing committee of the Sein Jaintia School, Sein Raij Shillong, Iongpiah Club Shillong and president of the Kur Shullai.
