AGARTALA: Tripura has recorded marginal fall in the crime against women though of the total cases registered with police about 46.05 per cent are women related cases.
While a total of 1470 cases of women related crime were lodged with police during the past year (2010), the number of such cases has scaled down to 1244 during the current year.
During the current year, maximum cases related to crime against women were registered in August with 150 cases while 145 and 137 such cases were reported to law enforcement agencies in October and July respectively.
Besides, the number of cases under the domestic violence Act has also come down to 562 in 2011 from 755 in 2010, according to an official release issued by Tapati Chakraborty, the Chairperson of TCW.
Interestingly, the number of registered cases under the domestic violence Act is less than that of cases lodged under different section of IPC though the women panel is advocating for using protections or provisions provided under the Domestic Violence Act.
Ms Chakraborty viewed that the downfall in the crime graph in the crime against women was the result of well-coordinated efforts initiated by the police, people and women panel.
Lauding over the role of the TCW, the Chairperson said that the women panel had made several proposals or requests to police authority to address the growing menace. “Police authority also had offered a helping hand towards these proposals or requests that resulted in downfall in the crime against women”, she recalled.
Citing instance, Ms Chakraborty said that the police authority was requested to lodge compliant under the Domestic Violence Act if any victim (woman/girl) knocks the door for justice. “The different sections of IPC could be used against accused as last resort to seek justice “, she said.
Asserting that the self reliant of women or girls could be handy to address the problem, Ms Chakraborty said that awareness could also contribute lot to check the menace.
The crime against women is the fallout of globalization which drives school goers to old-aged men to engage them in immoral activities, Ms Chakraborty added.
