Tura: The southern zone unit of Garo Students Union (GSU) on Tuesday called off Wednesday’s 12-hour Baghmara bandh (5am to 5pm) after the State government assured to look into its demands.
The GSU called off their second day of stir after the state government’s emissary, commissioner and Secretary Peter W Ingty, told the student leaders that their grievances were being addressed by the State Government.
The first day of the GSU strike on Tuesday disrupted normal life with Baghmara town wearing a deserted look as most of the government offices remained closed. Shops and banks kept their shutters down and public transport was off the road.
The southern unit of the GSU is demanding ouster of the deputy commissioner, Dr B D R Tiwari, accusing him of delaying the results of the district selection committee even though the DC’s office has refuted the allegations.
“We have called off our agitation after the assurance from the government and we are hoping to receive the government’s letter before the 20th of this month,” said GSU leader Prosper Marak.
He added that the union would not hesitate to restart their agitation after January 6 onwards if the government does not fulfill their demands.
