Illegal collection on NH -62

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The State government has ordered an inquiry into alleged illegal collection of toll along the National Highway 62.

Informing this here on Tuesday, Taxation Minster AT Mondal said East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Praveen Bakshi has been directed to conduct the inquiry.

“The Deputy Commissioner would submit his report to the Government immediately after completing the probe,” he said.

Earlier, Opposition NCP expressed shock over the illegal collection in the weighbridge operated by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) at Wageasi.

NCP leader Conrad Sangma had demanded action against toll gate operators for “charging inflated tax from trucks plying through it.”

The matter came into light when an Assembly Sub-Committee probing the alleged extortion by toll gate operators along the NH 62 visited a few check gates. “We have documents to support our findings,” Sangma had said.

Meanwhile, UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy has said his party would take a tough action against illegal collection if it comes to power in the next Assembly election due in 2013.

“We are committed to put an end to the illegal collection in NH-62,” Dr Roy said speaking at the formal merger ceremony of KHNAM and UDP here on Monday.

The UDP president said this kind of things cannot be allowed to continue since the State exchequer is losing several crores annually due to it.
