SHILLONG: The KHADC has summoned the Syiem of Nongspung Syiemship Peter Roger Syiemiong for signing an agreement with the Assam Government for construction of a 10 km road under its jurisdiction.

The KHADC had summoned Syiemiong on the basis of ta complaint which was lodged against Syiemiong by the adviser to the Syiemship, W. Syiemiong, accusing the former of “arbitrarily” selling land of the Syiemship to the Assam government.

The traditional chief of the Nongspung Syiemship led by the Syiem on Tuesday met the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to discuss the agreement which was signed with the Assam Government.

After meeting the members of the Syiemship Dorbar, KHADC executive member in-charge of Elaka administration, Lamphrang Blah fixed December 19 as the date of hearing to settle the dispute.

While justifying the agreement which he had signed with the Assam Government, the Syiem of Nongspung Syiemship said that the Nongspung Syiemship has put a condition that the Assam Government will not stake territorial claim or land right over the portion of road that runs from the Syiemship i.e. from Patgang, Longkhung, Jimrigang and Bakhlapara while taking up the road project

“Even after the construction of the road, the traditional chief will exercise all rights as currently exercised over administration and all other customary functions that the Syiem has been exercising.

It was also agreed that the Syiemship should grant the no-objection certificate to the Assam government based on the above conditions.

He further maintained that the road would help the villagers in the border villages for transporting agricultural products besides easing the movement of people.

It may be informed that Syiemiong had entered into agreement with the Assam Government which was represented by Assam minister in charge of Border Areas Development Hemanta Talukdar on December 3 last.

The agreement was made as “the construction of the 10-km PMGSY road would bring about development in the area.”
