Kathmandu: At least 20 people were killed and 24 others injured when an overspeeding bus carrying them skidded off a hilly road and plunged into a gorge in Baitadi district of Western Nepal.

The bus carrying 50 passengers was heading towards Mahendra Nagar from Darchula district. The vehicle, which was overspeeding, veered off the road while taking a turn in a bend and fell 200 metres down, witnesses said.

Police said 20 people were killed and 24 others injured. The injured were taken to hospitals in Dadeldhura and Baitadi. With the help of the local people, police carried out the rescue work after the accident.
