SHILLONG: The people of Khliehriat Civil Subdivision have expressed concern over the functioning of the Khliehriat CHC, which is one of the CHC Hospitals located in this Civil Subdivision and is supposed to provide health and treatment to the sick people of the area.

But of late, the villagers alleged, the patients of this area who go to this CHC for treatment have come under the supervision of few self interested doctors who work in the CHC thinking it to be their own private hospital.

On December 20, F Nongtdu,a resident of Diengshynrum Village went to the CHC to get his sister admitted there since she was seriously ill and was in need of immediate treatment. “There was no doctor when I went to the CHC at around 9:40pm. I had to wait there for the arrival of the doctor in the prevailing wintry condition. After waiting for about half-an-hour and with no other option, I took my sister to a private hospital (Lad Sutnga) which later referred the case to Bethany Hospital (Shillong),” said Mr Nongtdu.

However, before taking his sister to Shillong, Mr Nongtdu went to the said CHC again to enquire whether the doctor who is on night duty had arrived or not. “The doctor arrived at around 10:20pm and when I asked him why he has arrived late, he did not reply,” said Mr Nongtdu. This is not a one-off case as there are many patients who had to return empty handed during emergency situation as doctors keep away from the CHC during night hours, said many villagers. The citizens of Khliehrihat Civil Subdivision has appealed and suggested the state health department and the NGO’s of the area to enquire and see that the doctors perform their duties honestly and sincerely. “We also appeal to the government to ensure that these doctors should not treat the CHC/PHC as their own private hospital and come and go at their own convenient time,” said these villagers .
