Hasina to receive D Lit from Tripura University

Agartala: Tripura (Central) University will confer Honorary D.Lit upon Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on January 12 next at it the 9th convocation.

The premier is being conferred the D.Lit in recognition of the intimate relations of Tripura with Bangladesh since 1971. University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Arunoday Saha told UNI here today that altogether 113 gold and silver medals and 18 PhD degrees would be awarded to successful students in different subjects during 2010-11 academic year besides, D.Lit to Sheikh Hasina.

”Vice-President of India Hamid Ansari will deliver the convocation address at the ceremony,” Prof. Saha said, adding that in 24 years the University had already updated the list of degrees awarded in eight convocations in previous years. From now on the institute would confer the degree to the current achievers. Prof. Saha, however, pointed out that the University had taken the decision of conferring D.Lit on Sheikh Hasina a year ago. But in the last convocation she could not attend the programme.

The state had hosted 1.5 million refugees from Bangladesh in 1971 that had strengthened its bond with Bangladesh. Later several war memorials, connected to the Bangladeshi liberation struggle, had been erected in different parts of Tripura and the University wanted to recognize the relationship, he added. (UNI)
