SHILLONG: At least four people including a female lost their lives and more than dozen were severely injured in five separate major road mishaps in various parts of the State in the past 48 hours.
One Andrew Julian Sanga (30) succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night after his two-wheeler (MZ-01 F 9763) collided with a truck (AS 01 AC 6245), driven by one Suby Roy Lawai (31), at Dhankheti on December 31 night.
In another mishap, two persons — Fullberth Lyngdoh and Kyntiew Marwein (female) both of Kynshi village in West Khasi Hills district — were killed when a truck (ML05-E-9294) hit them on Sunday. The deceased were sitting on the road.
The incident occurred at 6am and the driver was in an inebriated condition,police said
In Shillong, one Rishan Khongsit (30) died on the spot when the scooter he was driving was hit by an identified truck at Nongthymmai on December 31 night.
Police informed that pillion rider David Nongsteng (29) was severely injured in the accident.
Eight people were injured after an empty truck (AS01-Y-9660) and a night super bus (TR02-1415) collided head-on on Sunday evening on the National Highway 44 at Sohryngkham.
The truck was on its way to Jowai and the bus was heading for Assam from Tripura. The injured included the driver of the truck, Miles Marbaniang (22), occupants of the night bus – Rutan Deb Nath and Md Ansan – 45 (both receiving serious injuries), Md Aquin (36), Isreal (40), Sapan Koch (49), Basantu Roy (49) and Md Makapu Khan (45).
Similarly, a taxi driver, Cleverland Kharkongor (30) of Mylliem 12th Mile sustained injuries when the taxi he was driving met with an accident at Kyrdem Khla near Mylliem on December 31 night.
A few cases minor accidents allegedly due to drunken driving were also reported from various parts of East Khasi Hills including Shillong.
Moreover, one truck (NL-01 G 3687) over turned at Pomlihir village near Mawryngkneng. The driver of the truck Sultana Hussain sustained serious injuries.
Meanwhile according to sources in GVK EMRI Meghalaya, road accidents also occurred at Williamnagar Main Bazaar and Damra under Resubelpara in East Garo Hills on December 31 night.
Further road accidents took place at Dakopgre and Balapala in Tura area of West Garo Hills district on Sunday.
Though several cases of vehicle accidents both major and minor were reported from across the state, authorities however could not provide detailed information especially on the exact number of casualties.
