London: Comedian Russell Brand is set to make up to 20 million pounds from his divorce with singer wife Katy Perry as he is in line for a 50/50 split of the couple’s earnings in the 14 months of their marriage.
Brand, 36, and Perry, 27, didn’t sign a pre-nuptial agreement when they married in October 2009. So under Californian law, he could be entitled to half of her fortune, reported Daily Mail online.
Perry is worth 28 million pounds, a fortune that industry insiders said has rocked recently to at least 45 million pounds due to her non-stop touring and commercial ventures. Brand, in contrast, has a net worth of about 11 million pounds from his stand-up tours and a string of hit movies including Get Him To The Greek and the remake of the Dudley Moore film Arthur.
Brand announced that the couple’s marriage was over after they spent Christmas apart and his lawyers filed divorce papers at Los Angeles Superior Court citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ between the pair who met at the MTV Music Awards in 2009. Brand and Perry reportedly threatened each other with divorce several times recently after a string of arguments.
“I believe the filing of this divorce was as childish as many of their arguments. It was a case of ‘I’m dumping you before you can dump me’, a total pride thing. I don’t think Russell liked that Katy was the bigger star. He’d pick her to pieces over the most trivial things,” a former aide said.
Meanwhile, Perry has been invited to stay with best friend, R&B star Rihanna, in Barbados following her split from Russell Brand.
Rihanna, 23, who organised Perry’s hen night before her wedding to comedian Brand, is said to have reached out to the star in the wake of the news that their marriage had come to an end. And now Perry, who is currently in Hawaii, is said to be considering jetting to Barbados to be with her best friend, reported Sun online.
“Katy is hardly speaking to anyone right now, but she called Rihanna as soon as she heard Russell was filing for divorce. Katy was embarrassed about calling her parents as they’d been so against Russell in the first place, but Rihanna was a great support for her and she really helped to calm her down,” a source said.
“When Perry told her the news, she suggested flying down to Barbados to stay with her and her family,” it added. It has also been claimed that Brand is now considering moving back to England in the wake of the split. (PTI)
