Tripura gears up for Sheikh Hasina's visit

AGARTALA: Tripura administration has geared up its machinery to make success of the two-day trip of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Vice-President of India Hamid Ansari, who would be arriving here on January 11.

Hasina would be conferred honorary Doctorate of Literature by Tripura Central University on ninth convocation to be held here on January 12.

Vice President Hamid Ansari, a prominent academician, who would be present at the convocation ceremony will hand over the doctorate degree to Hasina.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Chief Secretary Sanjoy Panda held several meetings with the top administrative and police officers and security personnel to make the visit of the two dignitaries a success.

Official sources said, foolproof security measures have been taken in view of the visit and the central government was closely monitoring the security arrangements.

Hasina will be the first Bangladesh Prime Minister to visit Tripura, which played a key role in Bangladesh Liberation War.

On January 12 morning, Ansari will attend a programme at Arundhati Nagar Police Line where he would decorate Tripura Police with ‘President’s Police Colour’ in a ceremonial programme.

Tripura police is the fourth state after Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh to get this award. Vice-President and Bangladesh Prime Minister will attend the convocation ceremony at Tripura Central University.

At Assam Rifles ground, Bangladesh Prime Minister and Indian Vice President would be given a civic reception before their departure on January 12. (PTI)
