Elephant kills forest staff

SHILLONG: A wild elephant trampled to death a wildlife staff at Lailad near the wildlife office in Ri Bhoi district on Tuesday evening.

Ri-Bhoi district Superintendent of Police Claudia Lyngwa, on Wednesday, informed that Kharsynteng was attacked by a wild elephant when he was returning to the forest outpost.

Sources informed that the elephant had strayed from a herd located in Nongkhyllem Wild Life Sanctuary in the district.

Meanwhile, Wildlife officials have remained on vigil after the attack to protect villagers and their agricultural farms in case the herd returns back. The official said they are trying to locate the stray elephant. Kharsynteng’s body was taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for post mortem.
