SHILLONG: KHADC CEM Pynshngainlang N Syiem has come down heavily on John F Kharshiing, the Chairman of Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, for terming the decision of the Council to suspend the Syiem of Hima Nongspung as ‘murder of democracy’.

“I think Kharshiing should first understand why the Council was forced to take such a drastic step. Actually, the Syiem of Hima Nongspung should have been questioned for signing the agreement with the Assam Government without taking the people of the Hima into confidence,” Syiem said on Wednesday.

While criticizing the Syiem of Hima Nongspung for not convening the Dorbar of Hima before signing the agreement, he said that it was the Syiem who had defeated the real spirit of democracy by signing the agreement on his own.

“The Assam Government would not construct the road without any hidden agenda. We must recall that Assam had constructed the road from Langpih to Mawsikar in the same manner. After construction of the road, Assam Government erected the boundary pillar upto Mawsikar,” the KHADC CEM stated.

He said that the Council would not want to see the local indigenous people of the State faces similar bitter experiences like in Langpih and Block I and Block II.

“If the Assam Government is so interested in constructing the road then they should write to the Centre to hand over the road project to Meghalaya,” Syiem said.
