Mumbai: Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville today said he expects the club’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson to remain with the team for a long time.

“You cannot plan for Sir Alex Ferguson finishing. I honestly don’t see him finishing. His mentality and person hasn’t changed in the last 5-10 years. He is still the same man. He is healthy,” Nevile told reporters here on his maiden visit to the country.

Ferguson, 70, has been at the helm of affairs at the club for 25 years and has been instrumental in winning 12 English Premier League titles for the club along with two UEFA Champions League trophies.

Neville believes that the Red Devils, who are currently at 45 points, trailing three points to leaders Manchester City, could win the title this year.

“It is still January. There is a lot to play yet. There are four more months. March, April and May are the most important months. At January, you are baking your cake and waiting to eat it. I remember we have been 10 points behind Arsenal in December and gone to win the title,” he said, adding that the situation the club is facing could have been quite worse given the injuries it has witnessed this year.

On Ferguson’s decision to remain calm during the January transfer window, he said, “The January transfer has never been successful. You pay inflated prices and the player plays only till May that season. So someone like Paul Scholes who decides to come back to football is beneficial because he knows the club.”

Scholes, who had retired in 2011, has decided to play for the club again six months into his break.

Neville played only for Manchester United in his career spanning nearly two decades. He was also the most capped player for England. (PTI)
