London: Elton John’s partner David Furnish has branded Madonna “desperate and embarrassing” after she beat ‘Rocket Man’ singer to win the Golden Globe for the song ‘Masterpiece’ from her directorial venture W.E. Jumping into the war of words between Madonna and Elton John, Furnish said the singer did not deserve to win the tropy, the Daily Mail reported.
Using an expletive, Furnish wrote on his Facebook, “Madonna. Best song???? “Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit.
Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in it’s narcissism. And her criticism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is.(sic),” he added.
The 49-year-old was angry after Elton John failed to pick up the gong for his song Hello Hello from ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’.
Elton John had predicted that the ‘Queen of Pop’ had zero chance to win the award before the beginning of the show.
He, however, was forced to eat his words as Madonna did manage to walk away with the trophy. Dropping the F-bomb, Elton John said Madonna had “no chance of winning” in an interview ahead of Sunday’s gala.
When asked by reporter whether his comments were fighting words, he said, “No, those are accurate words.” When stopped by the same reporter and asked about the British singer’s comments, an amused Madonna questioned, “Was he wearing a dress? Damn him, those are fighting words.” But when informed otherwise, Madonna said, “OK, well may the best man win.”
Madonna later said that she did not feel bad about winning the Golden Globe despite Elton John’s fury. “I hope he speaks to me. He’s known to get mad at me, he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad.” The enmity between the two singer apparently started in 2004 when Elton John mocked Madonna for lip-syncing in her concerts. (PTI)
