SHILLONG/ SILCHAR: Meghalaya and Assam police in a joint operation rescued four girls between the age group of nine and 28 from a red-light area in Silchar.
Civil Society Women Organisation (CSWO) and the Meghalaya police led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (Crime) Vivek Syiem, in collaboration with Assam police raided a brothel at Radhamadhav Road in Silchar from where the four were rescued, police said.
Two women traffickers – Suku Debnath and Gita Singh- were arrested in this connection.
Cachar Superintendent of police Deepak Chaudhary said while four girls were rescued from the brothel, two more were arrested from a red-light area allegedly for their involvement in the trafficking of the Meghalaya girls.
He said a team of about 15 policemen from Shillong along with a functionary of CSWO reported matter to him and in cooperation with the Cachar police (Assam), they conducted the raid in the brothel and managed to rescue the girls and subsequently arrested the two women.
They have been taken to Shillong.
“We have brought the girls with us for necessary counselling and post-trauma treatment,” said Agnes Kharshiing, the head of the NGO. (Agencies)
