A senior reporter of a local vernacular daily, Sec

tion Syiemlieh, lamented that people are losing

their lives on account of the perennial traffic snarl which has gripped the city for the past few months.

“We always hear of patients in the rural areas dying before they can reach the nearest health centre because there is no proper road. But now we are experiencing an unusual trend in the city where sick people die not because of lack of doctors but on account of the traffic gridlock,” said Syiemlieh, who lost his two-and-half-year-old son on December 23 last only because he could reach the nearest city hospital in time due to a traffic jam.

“I have first-hand experience so I understand how painful it is to see someone you love die in front of you and you are helpless at that moment,” the dejected father said.

While stating that there are many reported cases where people have lost their loved ones because of the traffic congestion, Syiemlieh urged upon the State Government to come up with a long term and scientific traffic management plans so that people do not lose their loved ones like he did.

“My son would have still been alive if not for the traffic jam,” Syiemlieh added.
