State honour for outstanding achievers

SHILLONG: To commemorate the 40th anniversary of statehood, the government will felicitate three women in recognition of their outstanding achievement in the fields of art and literature, social service and sports.

S Sweety Diengdoh, Rose Kayathinkara and Roshni Bhusal will be conferred the awards on January 26 even as the state celebrates Meghalaya Day on Saturday.

S Sweety Diengdoh, a noted writer will be awarded with the U Tirot Sing award for her tremendous work in the field of Arts and Literature.

A former director of the Doordarshan Kendra Shillong, Diengdoh who is also a member of ICARE expressed happiness over her selection for the award.

“I am humbled at the achievement and happy that the State Government has recognized our efforts to promote the state in the field of Arts and Literature,” Diengdoh said on Friday.

She also expressed eagerness to promote local talent and culture, to the best of her abilities, around the world.

Another awardee, Rose Kayathinkara from Medical Mission Sister, Mendipather will be conferred with the Pa Togan Sangma award for the social services she has rendered over the years.

Surprisingly, she was neither been invited nor informed about the felicitation programme till the filing of this report.

“I did not get any information from the State Government about the award so far,” she said on Friday.

The third recipient Roshni Bhusal will be conferred with the U Kiang Nangbah award for the laurels she brought to the state in the field of sports.

Bhusal has participated in different national level boxing championships held in the country over the years.

However when contacted, Bhusal lamented lack of proper recognition for her contributions. “After serving the state for more than 12 years I still do not have a government job to support my middle class family,” said Bhusal.

“I am happy at the felicitation but had I got even a small government my joy would have been doubled,” an emotional Bhusal added.
