SHILLONG: A 27-member team of Royal Wahingdoh FC would be leaving for Cuttack, Odisha on Tuesday to play in the Second Division I-League preliminary round which is scheduled to start from next month.

The team is leaving a week ahead of tournament starts in order to acclimatize themselves with the warm weather in Cuttack.

RWFC is scheduled to play its first match against Samaleshwari SC on February 1.

Talking to reporters on the eve of their departure on Monday, RWFC coach Carlton Chapman said that he is confident that his team would put up a good show in the tournament.

When asked if he is happy with the composition of his side, Chapman said that in fact, this year they have a stronger side now that some good foreign players are in the team lineup.

While admitting that the defence is still a worrying factor, RWFC coach said that the team definitely has prolific midfielders and strikers who can win matches on any given day.

When asked if they would qualify for the final round, Chapman said it would be difficult to comment anything on this since they cannot afford to take any team in the league lightly.

He, however, added that they had undergone intensive 15-day training in Shillong as preparation for the league.

“We have a week’s time to prepare ourselves in Cuttack before our first match,” Chapman said.
