Shillong: A herd of wild elephants numbering around 20, which created havoc for almost a day in and around Bajengdoba area in East Garo Hills on Tuesday, trampled to death a villager and moved to adjoining areas.

DFO (wild life) SN Sangma informed that the herd of wild elephants killed the villager identified as Krom Marak (30).

Marak tried to chase away the elephants when the incident took place.

The villager was probably in an inebriated condition and he went alone to chase away the wild elephants, Sangma said.

According to the official, large number of wild elephants first gathered at Chenggalma village close to Bajaengdoba since last night and the villagers had noticed the movement of elephants only during the daytime on Tuesday.

“They were in and around Bajengdoba for the whole day and we had sent our forest staff to protect the villagers”, the official added.

Two days back, a few houses in other villages close to Bajengdoba were destroyed by elephants.
