GUWAHATI: Security measures across Assam have been tightened and general public put on alert ahead of Republic Day celebrations on Thursday to thwart any subversive activity by insurgent outfits, who have called for a boycott of the celebrations.

“In view of the smooth observance of the Republic Day, 2012, the security measures have been tightened in the State,” a government release said here. A meeting was recently held in the state capital, wherein various measures pertaining to security and other arrangements were thoroughly discussed.

Special security cover has been laid on major and important sectors like OIL, railways, airport, bus stand and other public places, which may be possible militant targets. The government has also requested the public to be on high alert. (UNI)
