TURA: Thousands of Tura residents joined in a peace rally demanding the safe and unconditional release of the two abducted MeECL engineers — B Majaw and A Pothmi.

The rally, organized by the Hynniewtrep Welfare Association (HTWA), Tura, began from the Chandmary Playground and ended at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Concerned citizens, Church leaders, various NGOs, civil society members, students from various educational institutions, MeECL employees and teachers among others took to the streets demanding the safe release of the two abducted officials.

Representatives of HTWA, later, submitted a memorandum to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, urging him to work for the safe and unconditional release of the abducted officers. It also demanded security so that the citizens are protected from being abducted or killed by militants.

The Khasi Christian Fellowship, Araimile, Tura, have appealed to the abductors of the two MeECL engineers for their immediate and unconditional release.

Terming the abduction as unfortunate the fellowship denounced the kidnapping while urging for their immediate release.

Meanwhile, the Council of Nokmas has also condemned the abduction of the two employees, while maintaining that such abduction would not resolve the alleged grievances of inadequacy of supply of electrical energy to the rural areas of Garo Hills.

The Council also urged the abductors to release the officials at the earliest to ease the tension among the major communities of Meghalaya and to pave the way for prosperity and development of the region and the State.
