SHILLONG: The state police on Wednesday arrested one person who has been allegedly involved in a series of cheating and forgery cases which had affected many including a Lower Primary (LP) School at Smit.
The arrested individual has been identified as Marbatstar Kharbyngar of Smit. He was arrested by the police from Laitumkhrah on Wednesday.
Kharbyngar who claimed to be the Chief Financial Consultant of Namlang Agency and the general secretary of Smit Durbar had managed to dupe many people with fake documents and seals which were seized from his possession.
Police also recovered multiple SIM cards from the arrested person and believe that he had been using these cards to cheat people.
Briefing the press here on Wednesday, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Vivek Syiem said three cases of forgery and cheating have been registered against this person. Police also suspect that he is involved in many other activities apart from cheating. “Other activities of Kharbyngar are yet to be investigated”, Syiem added.
Many documents were seized from Kharbyngar which include fake mortgage of properties worth lakhs of rupees.
“Going by the number of agreements and sales deeds seized from him, it is evident that many people have been duped by this individual”, Syiem said.
Kharbyngar also misappropriated Rs 38,500 of a lower primary school at Smit.
Police say that he had been forging the signature of the Sordar and Rangbah Shnong of Smit to sell and mortgage land belonging to others and getting away with the money.
“I am sure there are several people who have been duped by this same man. I urge them to come forward and register a case against him. At present, we have received two FIRs from people who claim to have been cheated by Kharbyngar”, the Additional SP said.
While expressing serious concern over such incidents, Syiem exhorted the public to be more aware about parting with documents and information relating to money and property. “These cases are on the rise and even a literate person could be duped, so I request the public to be extra vigilant about such cases”, the Additional SP cautioned.
