SHILLONG: Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong recently trained the second batch of 14 doctors under 15 credit IIM certificate programme –Sustainable Healthcare Management System.
During the training, the doctors learnt how to lead from the front during crisis, motivate their staff under stress, read financial statements and preparing zero based budgets and making financial planning for their units/hospitals by utilizing NRHM schemes.
Besides this, the doctors would also train in familiarizing themselves with the various provision of the WHO, Medical Council of India including the Government regulations.
It is also encouraging to see the doctors realizing the potential of their own health infrastructure for grooming a disease free healthy population in Meghalaya during 2020.
The participants underwent self analysis on their personality, professional growth/exposure, SWOT analysis of their capabilities for building a new patient friendly healthcare system in Garo Hills during the training.Meanwhile, the doctors also went for field visit to see improvement that can be made in context of the inputs given in lectures, helped them to understand the necessity of improvement in functioning when participants return to their work places in the East and West Garo Hill Districts.
During the visits, special emphasis was laid on implementation of NRHM, the flagship scheme of the government.
Methodology adopted was generally briefing by head, visit to departments and interaction with the concerned staff of the departments to get their views on special achievement and their views on improvement. During such visit to departments the actual working is observed with a view to suggest improvement on the basis of class room inputs
The team visited Ganesh Das Hospital which was established in 1935 surprised with lack of facilities for handling nearly 1200 to 2000 deliveries in a month. The hospital evolved into a specialized hospital for Obstetric Gynecology and Pediatric care. It is a referral center with the objective of management of cases referred by primary and secondary center. It offers course in general nursing and midwifery. However, the visit to Civil Hospital, Shillong is a new experience for most of the doctors from Garo Hills. The hospital caters around 600 OPD cases per day, around 500 daily IPD cases.
The team also observed t hat despite it’s shortcomings and overloaded Civil Hospital is still functioning very well and able to give services to the public
During the valedictory function which was held on Saturday, the invited audience which include Additional Chief Secretary PBO Warjri and Health and Family Welfare department Additional Secretary KW Marbaniang were eager to listen to the doctors about the benefits they have gained from the training.
