Shillong: The State Government on Monday registered an executive body of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Society for carrying out developmental work within mining areas of Lafarge Umiam Pvt Ltd (Lafarge) at the Bangladesh border.
SPV secretary T T C Marak said the society was formed with powers to execute developmental projects in health, education, economy, irrigation and agriculture sectors in the project area, as specified by the Supreme Court.
The SPV Society was formed last year after the Supreme Court’s July 6 verdict directing Lafarge to carry out developmental activities within 50 sq km from the mining area in Shella.
Official sources said the SPV society will be headed by the former chief information commissioner G P Wahlang who belonged to the area.
The Supreme Court allowed Lafarge to resume mining in Shella after the company agreed to fund the revised Conservation Plan of up to Rs 130 crore towards afforestation and development of tribal area around the mines. It directed that it would have to pay Rs 72.66 crore at 9% interest from April 1, 2007 towards the SPV. (PTI)
