Madurai: Continuing their crackdown against former DMK ministers, the sleuths of Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) wing police on Friday conducted raids at the premises of K R Periyakaruppan and Ms A Tamilarasi and their relatives in Sivaganga,Dindigul, Madurai and Chennai for alleged possession of assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.
A DVAC press release issued here said the raids, began at 0600 hrs at the residences and farm houses of Periyakaruppan in his native Aralikottai village, house of his father-in-law, office in Thiruppathur, Blue Metals at Minnalkodi village, two houses of his aides namely “Pallathur” Ravi and Nathan in Pallathur and Karaikudi, respectively in Sivaganga district.
Raids were also conducted at a pawn broker shop at Natham in Dindigul district, his house in Chennai, properties of his wife Prema, brother-in-law Murugesan at Mannady in Chennai, and his son Dr Gokulakrishnan’s house at Thuraipakkam in Chennai.
On specific information that Periyakaruppan had accumulated assets in his and in the name of his family members, disproportionate to his known sources of income between May 13,2006 and March 31 2010 to the tune of Rs 1,10,60,546 while he was holding the post of Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments in the previous DMK regime, a discreet enquiry was conducted by the DVAC.
Based on the outcome of this enquiry, a case under sections 13 (1) (e) r/w (2) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 was registered against him by the DVAC, in Sivaganga.
The raids were conducted at 11 places, the sources added.
Simultaneously, another DVAC team led by Tirunelveli Deputy Superintendent of Police Thangamani conducted searches in the house of former minister for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Tamilarasi in her house at Ayyar Bungalow locality in Madurai. (PTI)
