Tripura records lowest conviction rate in NE

AGARTALA:National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has expressed concern over poor conviction rate in Tripura among all northeastern states and stressed on enhancement of investigation mechanism.

NCRB latest report revealed Tripura had only 11.1 per cent conviction rate in criminal cases in the region, which was much below the national average of 40.7 per cent and added that Tripura police lacked legal insight and were clueless on ways to present evidence before the court.

Conviction rates in the other northeastern states stands at 17 per cent in Assam, 42 per cent in Meghalaya, 59 per cent in Arunachal Pradesh, 68 per cent in Manipur, 78 per cent in Nagaland and 93 per cent in Mizoram, the report mentioned.(UNI)

 EC observers in Manipur to check photographs

IMPHAL:Following complaints of bogus voting in some polling stations in Manipur during the Assembly elections, three observers from the Election Commission on Sunday arrived here to verify the photos of voters, officials said.

Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal Sunil Gupta, D K Pandey of CRPF (Ranchi) and Gaurav Dwivedi from the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at New Delhi would verify the photographs of voters taken during the polling with the photos in electoral rolls. Along with Manipur election officials, the observers would check the photos of the voters only in the polling stations from where the EC had received complaints of irregularities. “Every effort would be made to ensure that all irregularities are rectified so that votes of only genuine voters are counted, they said. Of the total 17 lakh voters, about 13 lakh people had exercised their franchise in the Assembly elections held on January 28. (UNI)

 NSCN-IM cadres held

KOHIMA: Assam Rifles have arrested in all six cadres of NSCN-IM along with a huge quantity of arms and ammunition in Mokokchung town.

In a release issued by Assam Rifles PRO here today said acting on specific intelligence inputs, Assam Rifles personnel carried out search operations in a populated area of Yimyu Ward, Mokokchung town on Wednesday last.During the search operation, six hardcore NSCN (IM) cadres were apprehended along with huge quantity arms and ammunition, which included two pistols, three revolvers, four hand grenades among other things.(UNI)
