Complaint against ex-HNLC chief

JOWAI: Jaintia Hills Police have started an inquiry into an assault complaint lodged against former HNLC chief Julius Dorphang.

A police team led by Sub-Inspector C. Shylla on Friday visited the coal mine of the complainant Testlang Rymbai.

Rymbai owns a coal mine at Madan Briwar under Sumer Patorship in Raliang Elaka.

The Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, O Pasi informed that no criminal case was registered against Dorphang yet.

“A senior police officer was sent to inquire into the allegation and an appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law,” Pasi said. A police complaint has been lodged against former HNLC chief and his associates by Rymbai, a resident of Wapungskur, for allegedly assaulting coal labourers, drivers and forcibly taking away coal from a mine in Briwar area under Raliang Elaka. According to Rymbai, the former HNLC chief along with associates illegally trespassed into his coal mine and took away three truckloads of coal worth Rs. 2, 70, 000.00 besides threatening all labourers engages in the coal mine. They allegedly assaulted two of his driver, Riwan Sungoh and Maishan Sungoh. Both Riwan and Maishan on Friday told newsmen on Friday that a group of 15 to 20 persons led by Dorphang came to the coal mine on Wednesday morning and chased away all the miners. “The next afternoon they took away a truckload of coal after assaulting me,” Riwan said. The mine owner said a few months back Julius had demand Rs. 50 lakh from him and added that since he did not pay the amount Dorphang along with his associates have started troubling him since then.
