SHILLONG: Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh’s comment that the JNNURM buses are meant to serve the general public and not for commercial purpose has stirred anger among the East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association (EKHLTWA).

The association reiterated that any commercial vehicle should not bear the private registration number for commercial purposes as per the Central Motor Vehicle Act.EKHLTWA general secretary Wandonbok Jyrwa slammed the minister’s comment saying “This is clearly a violation of the law”.Citing examples of Delhi where the JNNURM buses are plying under the Corporation and with a yellow registration plate, Jyrwa questioned the state government for bye-passing the law.  He also said that these vehicles are even exempted from taxes and even from being checked by the District Transport Office of the vehicles documents.

Expressing their concern regarding this, the association has also threatened to check the documents of the JNNURM buses on their own if these buses are not stopped from plying with the Government registration number. Meanwhile, the association urged the DGP to speed up with the clarification and to make clear if the STPS buses can use Government registration number (ML-01) for commercial purposes.
