Philippines scientists on five-day visit to State

SHILLONG: A four-member team of scientists from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Phillippines led by Jojo Lapitan met Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma here on Thursday.

The delegation which is on a five-day visit to the State, on Thursday gave a presentation to the State Government about formulating suitable strategies for enhancing rice production in Meghalaya.

The team of scientists visited different areas of the State and conducted studies on the ground realities and the present scenario relating to paddy cultivation in Meghalaya. The areas visited by the team included Resubelpara and plain areas of Garo Hills, besides some places in Ri Bhoi and Jaintia Hills and also the Central Agriculture University and the ICAR.

The visit of the IRRI scientists to Meghalaya is a sequel to the discussions which they had with the Chief Minister and senior government officials during their visit to the Philippines in December last year.
