700 suicides in Tripura last year

Agartala: Over 700 people committed suicide in Tripura in the past one year, said Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. Replying to a query of opposition MLA Gopal Roy, he said a total of 710 people had chosen premature death. To another query Mr Sarkar said cases of bride-burning had touched the peak in 2011 in comparison to the previous two years. The rate of crime against women had touched 110 while 127 molestation cases were registered over the year. At least 30 rape cases had been registered in the city in 2011, while the number rose to 73 in the state from August 11 till December 31. However, the incidence was higher touching 40 in 2009 and 2010. (UNI)

4 houses gutted

Aizawl: Four houses, being occupied by six families, were completely gutted in Mamit town, the district headquarters of the Mizoram-Tripura border Mamit district on Tuesday. No one was killed or injured in the inferno, police said adding that one nearby house was dismantled to prevent further spread of the fire. Police suspected that the fire originated from a furniture workshop.(PTI)

Explosives found

Imphal: Police on Tuesday recovered a bag containing bombs and explosives from a jungle in East district of Manipur, official sources said. Acting on a tip-off, police searched the area of Wakha Ching in the district and found the bag full of explosives. (PTI)
