GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) authority has denied reports in a section of the media that it was in the process of closing down an old Assamese medium primary school at Hijuguri in Tinsukia district.

The railway clarification came in the wake of the anti-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) issuing warning against reported attempt by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to close down the school.

In a statement, the NFR authority said, “It has been reported in a section of the press that Northeast Frontier Railway has issued notice of closure to the Primary School run by the N. F. Railway at Hijuguri which has resulted in discontentment among a section of the people.

However, to allay the general feelings of discontentment, the N. F. Railway authorities would like to put on record the following.

“The N. F. Railway authorities would like to categorically state here that there is no proposal for closure of the Primary School run by the N. F. Railway at Hijuguri. The N. F. Railway authorities conduct periodical general review arising out of the routine Work Study Programme of the railway establishments over entire N. F Railway jurisdiction. Accordingly, a routine notice was sent and the issue was listed for review at the highest level.

Following the review, it has been decided to continue to run the primary school in the interest of the people of the region.

“The Northeast Frontier Railway is committed to the welfare of its employees and the people served by it. There is no deviation from this policy and we regret that the news item was published without verifying the fact with the authorities resulting in misrepresentation and misunderstanding.”
