SHILLONG: The less percentage of young voters in the capital city has compelled the East Khasi Hills District Administration to open a special counter in its office premises to assist the youth to come forward and register their names in the voters list.

This special counter which was opened here on Friday was set up as part of the continuous revision of electoral rolls.

“There is less percentage of young voters between the age group of 18 to 20 in the district as compared to the national average,” East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal told reporters here on Friday.

Goyal stated that the less percentage could be due to various factors like lack of interest on the part of the youth to get themselves enrolled and besides there are many students who are studying outside.

“The special counter will assist those who are willing to enroll themselves in the voters list,” the Deputy Commissioner said, while adding that it would also help the voters to include or delete their names and correct any wrong details entered in the electoral list.

He also informed that the applicants can fill the forms to enter their names in the electoral rolls and on the same day a hearing will be held by the officials so that the applicants don’t have to wait for long to complete the formalities.

“The special counter will also act as a ‘single stop’ for applicants to avail the forms and deposit them with a purpose to ensure that eligible voters are not left out,” Goyal added.

Meanwhile, it was also learnt that people can also register their names in the voters list online by visiting the site www.ceomeg-halaya.nic.in.

“This is basically to enable that students studying outside Shillong can send in their names with the signature of the heads of the educational institutions so that their application forms can be processed without the students being physically present in the office of the Deputy Commissioner for verification”, Goyal stated.
